Last year Harriet and Elisa watched this video and we decided we were all desperate to try mochi so I looked everywhere but couldn’t find it. After work today I stopped at my favorite Asian grocery to ask the woman who works there (I’m a regular) where I could find the closest film store. We chatted for a while and then I asked about the pile of flat white disks sitting on the counter. “Mochi.” She explained that it can only be bought around the new year and said it is really good with a drizzle of maple syrup. I brought home the biggest disk, broke off a few pieces which are in the oven now, and have the rest in the freezer. I suppose if we really do love it I should go get a bit more tomorrow. The rock hard little pieces puff and get gooey after about ten minutes in a 400 degree oven. They are just about ready now….
Well, how were yours? Loved this video, especially how she “suggests” to the man how to
water plants. Fun stuff. Never heard of this mochi before, but now I bet I see it a few times elsewhere, that’s how things like this work. Thanks!
That is how things work! I was driving to work this morning and NPR had a story on mochi. Harriet and I gave it the thumbs up and Elisa wasn’t a big fan. Billy was neutral and my dad really liked it. I’m going to buy some more. Quick and easy is right up my alley and I read that Japanese farmers eat it for stamina in the winter.
